AVG Anti-Virus Updates Remain Free by By Peter Grad

"Q. I have been a user of AVG Free Anti-Virus for many years. But I recently have been receiving messages that updates for this program will not be available beginning in June. What's the story?

Grisoft, the company behind the excellent AVG anti-virus program that I have long recommended, behaves as many software companies do: It offers a great free product but uses sometimes slightly devious means to get you to subscribe to a more powerful, paid version.

The wording of the AVG pop-ups that have appeared on users' screens over the last few weeks suggest the free version is being phased out as AVG 8.0 is introduced. That perception is not correct.

DTV: What you need to know

In February 2009, television broadcasters will no longer be transmitted as analog signals. This marks the date that Congress has mandated for a change to digital signals, or DTV.

The signal change will not just improve the quality of programming, but it will also open up valuable parts of the broadcast spectrum for public safety officials, such as fire, police and emergency personnel. The transition will offer a better quality picture and sound, compared to the old analog system.

If you subscribe to NHTC Cable or satellite service you DO NOT need to purchase any equipment to keep your television working. You will continue to receive the same high quality broadcasts as usual.

Only people who receive their TV signal from a rooftop antenna or "rabbit ears" will be affected by the change. They may need to purchase a converter to continue to receive television signals.
